Whole House Ventilation Solutions
Trade stale indoor air for fresh air all year round. Energy efficient windows and doors, thicker insulation and air tight vapor barriers have made homes more efficient, saving both energy and money. While this has made many homes more efficient, it has also made it nearly impossible for these homes to “breathe”, to expel the stale polluted indoor air and exchange it for cleaner, fresher outdoor air. “If too little outdoor air enters a home, pollutants can accumulate to levels that can pose health and comfort problems. Unless they are built with special mechanical means of ventilation, homes that are designed and constructed to minimize the amount of outdoor air that can ’leak’ into and out of the home may have higher pollutant levels than other homes. However, because some weather conditions can drastically reduce the amount of outdoor air that enters a home, pollutants can build up even in homes that are normally considered ’leaky.’”
What is It?
Ventilation is the exchange of indoor air for outdoor air. Two types of home ventilation methods include natural and mechanical ventilation. In natural ventilation, outside air enters the house through opened doors and windows. In mechanical ventilation, there are electronic devices such as fans that remove air from a single room, to whole-house systems that remove polluted indoor air and then distribute filtered and conditioned outdoor air throughout the house.
Why Do I Need Mechanical Ventilation?
According to the EPA, sources of indoor pollution that release gases or contaminants into the air are the primary cause of indoor air quality problems in homes. Not providing enough ventilation can aggravate and increase indoor pollutant levels by not bringing in enough fresh, outdoor air to dilute indoor source emissions and also by not carrying enough of potentially unhealthy indoor air pollutants out of the home. Ventilating a home by opening doors and windows may not always be feasible due to security reasons or outdoor noise levels, rain, snow or weather conditions being too hot or cold to open a window. Mechanical ventilation allows a quiet, energy efficient way to exchange stale and sometimes toxic indoor air for fresh, outside air throughout your entire home. An Aprilaire Ventilation System allows you to ventilate your whole-home’s stale, polluted indoor air with fresh air in an energy-efficient way 365 days a year. “Your home needs ventilation—the exchange of indoor air with outdoor air—to reduce indoor pollutants, moisture, and odors. Contaminants such as formaldehyde, volatile organic compounds, and radon can accumulate in poorly ventilated homes, causing health problems.”

The American College of Allergists states that 50% of illnesses are caused or aggravated by poor Indoor Air Quality—illnesses such as colds and flu, allergies and asthma. Aprilaire Whole-House Ventilation puts dust, pollen, mold, bacteria and viruses, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other airborne pollutants where they belong—outside your home.
Excess indoor humidity has perhaps the most negative impact on your home’s comfort. Odors caused by pets, cooking and other everyday living activities also contribute to general discomfort. Aprilaire Whole-House Ventilation exchanges your home’s sticky, smelly air with fresh outdoor air.
Excess indoor humidity provides the perfect breeding ground for mold and mildew which destroy the surfaces on which they grow. Excess indoor humidity also causes condensation build-up on windows, destroying their finishes and structural integrity. Aprilaire Whole-House Ventilation, especially when combined with a dehumidifier, can be an effective means of minimizing damage caused by too much moisture in your home.
Aprilaire Whole-House Ventilation provides you with real energy savings, allowing you to bring in the desired amount of fresh outdoor air into your home—exactly when you want it. Aprilaire Whole-House Ventilation also prevents air that is too hot or too cold from entering the home, keeping your heating and cooling system from operating unnecessarily.
